Will the current Nvidia GPU's drop in price when next gen is released?

I've seen some of the buzz surrounding the possible release of the GTX1180 at the end of the year, so just wondering how much of an impact it makes on the price of current 10 series when this happens?

I currently have a GTX1060 6GB, but looking to eventually upgrade to a 1080 or 1080ti come 2019 (going to buy a 1440p 165hz monitor too).

I can never justify spending stupid amounts of money on the latest high end graphics card, but would consider it if the 1080 was to drop significantly once the next gen come out.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

If GPU mining is still a significant thing at the end of the year, new GPUs mean major mining outlets hogging the new GPUs and many ditching their older generation ones, which should put significant pricing pressure on the current-gen market both new and used.

We won't know for certain until it happens, but it is a fairly safe bet that current-gen stuff will get much cheaper at some point after the next-gen stuff launches.

According to AMD, the RX680 will bring 1080Ti class performance down to the $400 price point. That should be a fairly good reference point to how pricing on current-gen stuff may end up scaling into 2019.

Or just moving the Vega architecture to the RX naming scheme?

Go ahead and buy your monitor first.
Then you will better know what you need for graphics.

The new cards will first appear at the high end; GTX1080ti class and beyond.
They will cost a bunch.
First because of early adopters and for those with unlimited budgets.
They will also be in short supply.
Expect to see stock reference designs first and the aftermarket designs will be somewhat later.

All this is saying, buy what you need when you need it.
Yes, GTX1080 class cards will sell for their price/performance value on the used market.

And... I doubt AMD is going to sell the rumored RX680 type cards for less than what the market will bear.

This. Yes the prices will drop, but probably not as much as you're hoping. The price tends to stabilize in terms of price/performance. That is, if the new 1170 offers the same performance as the old 1080, then used 1080 prices will stabilize at a little below 1170 prices. And your strategy to wait for used prices to drop due to new releases won't really save you much vs buying new.

It was briefly different the last gen, as cryptocurrency mining keys off of performance/watt rather than raw performance. So older cards which had a lot of raw performance but used a lot of power to achieve it were dumped en masse for newer more power-efficient cards, and used prices quickly dropped on eBay. But from what I hear, mining is moving towards ASICs, so I wouldn't count on it happening again.

There is a 7nm Vega shrink in the works, don't remember seeing a confirmation on whether RX680 will be Vega or Navi. Sony has allegedly paid AMD for the privilege of being first to get Navi for the PS5, so mainstream Navi may be late. In that case, RX680 will fundamentally be a scaled-up Vega with a die shrink.

don't count on it. the stock will be long gone before you will see massive price drop on them. even if you can find some of them most of the time they will retain their original price (sometimes even higher) due to lack of stock. if you want, for example 1080 performance at much cheaper price just wait for nvidia to release 1160/2060 (or what ever nvidia wants to call them).
