So i'm currently rocking a i5 7600k oc'ed to 4.5ghz along with my 1080, now im well aware of the limits my cpu is putting on my performance in select titles and will definitely be a burden in the future. I was thinking of upgrading to the 8700k but it seems that they're just selling icelake processors now. Would a 9700k be too powerful for my 1080 or would the pair be sufficient for 1440p 144hz gaming. Thanks.

You will need to change the motherboard and 10th gen is just releasing. The 9700k will be i5 level of 10th gen.
Yep aware of the motherboard change required, just wanted to make sure I didnt jump from a bottleneck right into another <Mod Edit> bottleneck lmfao, and as far as 10th gen goes im more than willing to make the swap, would probably be the smartest choice future proof wise for my gpu upgrade id likely make within the next 2 years no?

10th gen is a decent step up over 9th gen. For example the i9 9900k is now i7 level.
