Question Will the PSU from the Dell T5500 be fully compatible with the T3500 workstation? I want the 875w one so I can run an Rx580 or more.

I was thinking of picking up a power supply like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Preci...Harness-D-PN-0J556T-DP-N-0W299G/202956706121?

Or this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-0W299...0-N875EF-00-with-Harness-Cables/202956888261?

Because I'm not really willing to shell out $90 for a modern PSU that has a lot lower wattage than those.

But I'm also not entirely sure whether throwing an 875w T5500 PSU in my T3500 as a replacement for my 525w psu is the best thing to do.

I want to be able to use an RX580 (it's 185w, so my current 525w psu is a little small probably) and maybe even another graphics card at the same time if possible, and the 875w PSU seems to be one of the cheapest -- so would it work fine for what I want?

Did you google? This is one of the first results, from a Dell website -- https://www.dell.com/community/Desk...-swap-Precision-T3500-with-T5xxx/td-p/5015643

I did google, and most things i saw said it's compatible -- I just wonder why most people don't use older, high wattage PSU's in their upgrades, and instead use some new PSU from someone like Corsair or EVGA.

I can get an 875w T5500 PSU for probably around $30 -- but if I go for a new PSU, then I'd be looking at upwards of $70 for a decent 700w one, and over $100 for something like 875w.

Why don't more people use higher watt dell psu's in their T3500 upgrades? They seem pretty reliable

Because a new PSU from Corsair is so much more reliable than an old one from Dell due to it being new and not used for years and years for heavy work load. That said when my PSU in my T3500 burned out I bought the same one but should've got something a little better so I could put in a better card than the 750ti for the same price!

The dell t3500/5500/7500 are all very old systems, a psu really shouldn't be used for 10 years, and these psu's are either used or old stock. You really don't want to use such things with newer components.
Watts don't matter here. It is likely that the 875w unit from the dell is inferior to a budget 450w or 550w corsair cx or similar.
TBH, why would you pay $40 for a 10 year old psu with an unknown usage history and that may fail at any moment. To me, paying $70 for a corsair cx650 (it's oos now, but was that price a couple days ago) with a 5 year warranty, more stable load regulation, cross load, transient response, and ripple suppression is a much better deal.

Honestly, I hane no idea what kind of oem dell used for the 875 units or what kind of topology they used. They're 80 plus silver, but efficiency means nothing in terms of quality.

What are your total system specs.

With my t3500, I used a xeon x5670 paired with a r9 380x(250w) and a corsair cx550 handled it fine(I was using a seasonic s12II 520, but it had issues with cross load, don't ever use group regulated units).
