It comes down to the game but it should be a good pairing for the most part.

Your performance issues is actually going to be due to the memory, 2400mhz is too slow for AMD Ryzen and will cause either lower FPS then 3200mhz or more frequent/drastic FPS dips.

When you increase the resolution you are less likely to have a cpu bottleneck as the gpu has to work a lot harder to render frames at higher resolutions so no the 3900x wont bottleneck a 1080ti at 1440p. In regards to the ram the Ryzen Infinity fabric architecture has a performance drop off under 3000mhz.

the 3900X is pretty darn respectable in any variety of gaming scenarios I saw it compared to , particularly against the 8700K/9700K at any resolution... (Frankly, the few hundred dollars less expensive 3700/3800 will do 98+% as well, as there is little scaling in gaming performance yet for above 8 cores/16 threads...)

Definitely don't purchase a 3800X. All the tests out there indicate that the extra cost for a 3800X doesn't provide any noticeable performance boost in real life. The 3700X is the best bang for the buck, and as mentioned earlier, you can put the extra savings towards better RAM. I am currently running with 3200 Corsair Vengeance RAM, and it is a pretty sweet setup.

Thanks so much for the feedback guys! I looked into the performance difference and it seems for gaming that the 3700x and 3800x aren’t much different. So I’ll probably just run with the 3700x as suggested. What raam would you guys recommend. I see I need above 3k MHz but I have been reading that some brands aren’t able to hit the advertised speeds. Really appreciate the replies!

Ideally you want Samsung B-die memory, at least 3200 CL14 <(IMPORTANT!) or 3600 CL16 <(IMPORTANT) which will help you get the best possible speeds with Ryzen. Wouldn't bother with Corsair for Ryzen... I had Vengeance in my 4790K build, switched to GSKILL for 2 Ryzen builds after doing lots of research (be really careful you get the right model number with the right CL to ensure you get b-die) -

G.Skill DIMM 16 GB DDR4-3600 Kit for Memory F4-3600C16D-16GTZN, Trident Z (the latest, greatest)

OR

G.SKILL F4-3200C14D-16GTZ Trident Z Series 16 GB DDR4 3200 MHz CL14 1.35 V Memory Kit

See here for references (b-die still matters for Ryzen 3000 series) - https://lab501.ro/procesoare-chipse...-micron-e-die-vs-hynix-cjr-english-version/14

Check out the B-die finder to verify if the kit you are ordering is the right stuff - https://benzhaomin.github.io/bdiefinder/

Once installed, don't forget to enable XMP in bios (unless you are confident in setting your own timings) to allow it to run at the fastest speed. No real point going over 3600 due to the way infinity fabric works (at 3600 you are still at 1:1:1 ratio) from what I've read...

Also not worth getting a 3800X, 3700X overclocked can pretty much match it as proven by the well-respected GN video here... (I bought the 3700X as a result)
