Will the USB 3.0 controller get damaged if I use it for connecting an external HDD as primary hard drive?

Until my damaged internal hard drive gets replaced from the service center, I've decided to use an external hard drive I have (WD My Book) to continue with my work. This drive has a USB 3.0 interface. If I install the OS and select it as the primary hard drive, would the mainboard's USB controller get damaged due to continuous access of the drive via the USB 3.0 port?

Could you shed any light on this? Thank you.

Solution
Installing the Windows OS on an external is not recommended, and real PITA to get running.

Going through the install, you can't even select it as the target drive.

Uh, oh.. If I install Linux? Linux would serve me for the time being.

You can run Linux directly off a CD (or USB drive) for short term use.
