Will this be good for future games?

For Christmas I'm buying an upgrade to my amd A10 CPU and gtx 660. I want to know if this will be "future proof" and handle most cpu/gpu intensive games for 3-4 years. Also, should i spend the extra money and get an i7 or buy a high end i5?

Intel Core i5 4670k/i7 4790k cpu
Asus z-97 p motherboard
Cooler Master hyper 212 EVO
8 GB 1600 mhz
1 TB Western Digital Blue
EVGA GTX 970 ACX 2.0
Fractal Design Define R4
Rosewill 750W PSU
Asus Opical Drive
Windows 8.1 64-bit

Future proof or nah?

For gaming the i7 is basically irrelevant, an unlocked i5 will be fine. I know some people that like the rosewill PSUs but personally I would go with something else if you are buying it new. That's my 2 cents.

Thanks for the reply, I'm hoping prices go down though. I don't know if there will be sales for Christmas, or if they will jack up prices because that's when they make lots of sales

I would agree with you nearly 100%.

Nearly all games don't require i7s or need i7s power to run at their highest settings, however there are select few that can use the i7s hyperthreads for extra performance. So if you can't afford an i7, just go with an i5, but if you have extra money to spend, go with i7.

However, imo the extra money spent on a better CPU would be better served if spent on more GPU power. Sure there are a select few titles that will benefit but modern games are less and less CPU reliant compared to past generations. Personally Id rather have an i5 and gtx 980 instead of an i7 and gtx 970. Of course if we are talking about tasks other than gaming then of course the i7 will be better. But for gaming I'd be hard-pressed to see a difference and I don't play many RTS games.
