Processor: Core i5-4690 35ghz
Motherboard: MSi Z97 Gaming 5
Graphics Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB
RAM: Crucial Ballistix 16GB

I'm thinking of either a GTX 970 or 980, but what do you guys think? Should I go with a better graphics card, or can I just buy two and combine them like one does with the RAM? I'm new to PC gaming so excuse me if that last question is stupid. I plan on playing the game on ULTRA settings at 1080p. Whatever is necessary, what do you guys think?

Solution
First off, if you only have the 4690, and not the 4690K, don't bother with a z97 motherboard unless you plan to SLI.

What you are referring to about combining two cards is called SLI or Crossfire (SLI for NVIDIA, Crossfire for AMD). This is possible if you have the proper motherboard, and a good enough PSU with the proper wattage. SLI would help performance if GTAV is optimized for it, however it does not double performance. Personally, I would go with a GTX 980, as SLI has it's drawbacks, and doesn't always work perfectly.

So the answer is no... An i5 is not going to get you to Ultra settings no matter how many GTX 980s you hook up to it at 1080p.

I'm yet to see anything that claims to play gta 5 on ultra, all the eye candy on...Even with a i7 5960X, game debate is calling the cpu a bottleneck to a GTX 980ti and 16gb of RAM at 1080p and only calling High settings.

I have no idea where you got that idea from, but an i5-4690 will absolutely get ultra settings.
