Hello all.

im planing on giving myself a greate christmas gift this year. i am going to build my self a gaming/media mini pc.

So far i have tried to pick parts that is more than good enough to play the newest games at a as high graphic as possible for years to come. also i would like the computer to be as silent as possible (a hard task i know)
some compromises has been made, but all in all i have deicided for the configuration shown further down.

my question to the community, can any of you see any issues i might get with this configuration? do you have any comments on the parts picked? or should this pc be able to full fill my dreams and requirements?

Yeah thats the part im most in doubt about. the reason i choose this one is the price, and that i have heard negative things about the closest challenger ( Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM004 ) Which one do you think will be least annoying?

Hmm. do you have any suggestions on another PSU with better performance who is also silent?

you could hold off on the WD for awhile to keep the hiss away and fill the ssd with games but at some point you might need to get another ssd for games repository,. HDD hiss is one thing I find unacceptable in a living room/lounge. My PVR has an hdd that hisses away relentlessly and its a relief when I switch i off.

If you get a Corsair RM550x, the fan won't even spin ever with that system.

yeah i have been looking at it before, but as it stands right now, a swap of the pure power PSU to this one will mean my budget is going to breake :/ (im close to the budget line)
- an alternative would be to go for a cheaper CPU fan, but that might affect the sound level :/

what do you think is the quietest build ?:
1. keeping the current PSU and CPU fan
2. replacing the pure power PSU with the RM550x and the Noctua CPU fan with a Be-Quiet Pure Rock fan (this is noted to be 4-6dB noisier

Decibels is tough because it's relative to distance from a source. If you double your distance, then perceived lousness goes down 3dB. If you half your distance, perceived volume goes up 3dB. WHenever fans say they are x decibels, you really can't tell what they mean. How far away was this measurement taken? Was the fan out in the open or in an isolated box such as a computer case?

Why don't you just not get a Z170 motherboard and put it toward a half-decent PSU at least? The GTX 1070 is in no way cheap, so the PSU should be able to fit in your budget.

To be honest though, trying to make the computer silent in a way can be pointless, because once you start gaming the GPU is going to be louder than everything else. GPUs aren't quiet unfortunately, it's just how it is. Of course, there are ways you can make the computer quiet when you're not gaming, and that's by getting good Noctua fans or just not having as many fans. Plus there are a lot of non-Be-Quiet PSUs and non-RMx PSUs that should still be inaudible and fit within your budget.

The Bitfenix Whisper Series 550W is a good option for you. It's new.

yeah i know, but when reviews and word-to-mouth sates one is less loud than another, it seems plausible that its true.

well i have actually done that already and the parts list has gone trough a lot of changes already. the main issue is that in Norway the parts is not exactly cheap and the selection is rather small. if you take a look at the new list i have changed both the PSU and the CPU cooler. and thats brings me spot on my budget because of the transportation costs.
