Will this CPU be a decent upgrade?

Hello!

I currently have a i5-650 CPU in my desktop, would it be a decent upgrade if I get a i7-950 CPU.

I play games like Fortnite and Overwatch, since my motherboard is a 1156 socket there is not a lot of CPU's to choose from.

Solution

I'd get it. It's a good deal. In the US you might be able to get a 4790K for $175 to $250 depending on who you buy it from. And that's just for the CPU. So you're getting a great deal. That's like buying the CPU but with mobo and ram thrown in for free.

No.

Why dont u spend a few extra bucks and get a ryzen 1200 or i3 8100 with 8gb ddr4 ram. A gtx1050ti or rx560?

Why put money in old hardware when u can save or try spending a few extra?

Thank you,
Ishaan

Oh sorry my apologies I thouht the i7-950 was a 1156 socket, also will the i3 8100 work with my 1156 socket motherboard?

Also I have ddr3 RAM so I do not know if the i3 will support that.

Thanks :)

Your entire system cannot be upgraded at all really.

You do need to start again, because it is very old.

A bottom of the range Ryzen is your best bet. If you list your current computer and how much money you have, someone nice here maybe able to help you spend the money to upgrade. But really, it is very old in computer terms and needs selling to raise some money for a new one.

Thanks for the reply, I might sell something of mine still deciding. If I do my budget will most likely be $300-350USD, but I can't ship stuff from overseas, if someone makes a list I'll try to find those parts cheap on the website I buy from or I also get some parts second hand for much cheaper.

Thanks again! :)

Please list the country you are in as well.

I like to order from NEWEGG because they guarantee price and import tax, and if you pay more - they pay for it!
I buy from NEWEGG because it can be quite a bit cheaper than the country I am in as well.

I am in South Africa
I found a i7-4790k second hand for $104 or in my currency Rand1500. Its a really good price on the CPU but my motherboard didn't support it, so if I were to upgrade my motherboard I would still most likely go for this.

Also on a second hand website someone is selling this build for around $300-350 or R5000 ZAR

CPU: i7 3930k
RAM: 16GB He did not say if it is DDR3 or DDR4
GPU: msi gtx 950 2gb

I can ask him for more info.
Its a whole desktop with the case and everything.
I can also go see it before I buy it as he lives not to far from me.

I went and looked at South Africa computer systems, and this is what I came up with from this website https://computermania.co.za
Things that can change = I couldn't find 2x4GB ram on website - but that is better if you can find that
You don't need both an SSD and HDD for now, the SSD will make computer feel faster and can fit some games on it, but you may have a lot of games and so you can use your old HDD as well
the CPU can be changed to something less, like a 200GE to save money
SSD can be smaller at 120GB - but then only few games will also fit on it
There is no GPU but the one inside the CPU called an iGPU

I can most likely get the second hand system for even cheaper the guy was willing to lower prices on his other items.

My main concern about my PC overall was that when I got it, it ran Overwatch smoothly at 60fps. Now a few months later I've been encountering slight drops like it would move from 60 to 54 and hop between these two values making it harder to aim, track and such. I have yet to clean the dust out of my desktop and apply new heat paste, so I wanna check if this will help me first.

I have also done defrags and I run games such as Overwatch at all low settings except somethings like the models.

I then thought it might've been the CPU, because when I opened up task manager I saw that the CPU goes up to 75% of usage sometimes in games like Overwatch and Fortnite.

The only weird thing for me is I did not experience these issues a few months back, someone said Overwatch had done some updates that effect certain hardwares performance on the game.

For around $200 I can get a 1150 socket Motherboard + i7-4790k CPU and 8gb Ram from the guy, then just use my current gtx 750 and 8GB DDR3 RAM with it as I already have a good power supply aswell.

Thanks for all your replies. I'll start by cleaning my pc first and putting in some fans for more cooling.

Thanks again everyone and have a good day!
