I want to upgrade my CPU, but I need to make sure that it'll be compatible and that it would give me a performance boost.

Here's my current rig:

MSI Z97 G45 Gaming
Corsair H100i cpu cooler
i5-4690 @ 3.50Ghz
16Gb G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1600
2 Asus STRIX GTX980 in SLI
Samsung 250Gb SSD for OS and games, 1Tb mechanical for storage
CX750M PSU

I'll be replacing the PSU with the Corsair HX850i and wanted to replace the CPU with the i7-4790K, or maybe just the i7-4790 since OC'ing makes me nervous.

I mostly use this PC to game, and half my gaming is WoW, which I'm told is a CPU bound game, but I also play everything from indies to AAA titles. Will I see a dramatic difference by upgrading?

Solution
For now you will not see a huge difference between the two for gaming. If you do ultimately decide to go with an i7, and don't plan on overclocking it, the K model is still about 15% faster than the non k model without an overclock applied. You would likely get an increase of around 7-10% FPS on WOW over your current configuration and not so much on other games.
