Hello :)

I am thinking of building my own gaming desktop but I am unsure when it comes to compatibility between the parts I would like.

Here is what I am thinking of buying:

Processor: (AMD FX-8120 8 core)

As I said, this is my first time buying parts and building a gaming computer. Im not sure if all of these are compatible together. All help is so so much appreciated and it will help me greatly.

Your motherboard is compatible with the rest of the system. However, I recommend getting a better video card. The 6850 is power-hungry compared to the comparably performing stock reference Radeon 7770. This 7770's factory overclock is enough for it to give even the Radeon 6870 something to worry about, but it's about the same price as your 6850:

Also, you should get this power supply instead of that crap Coolmax model:

Well I am so glad that it is compatible but I did consider the 7770. According to passmark and game debate the 6850 is better value for money?

Passmark is garbage and game debate is apparently wrong. Maybe their data is outdated. Also, the 7770 that I recommended is about 20% faster than a reference 7770. The reference 7770, with current drivers, is a little better than a 6850, meaning that this 7770 can literally go toe to toe with the 6870 and the GTX 560.

I went with your advice and switched the power supply, and I will definately look into the 7770 right now. Everything is still compatible together?

Yes, everything is still compatible. The problem with 7770 benchmarks is that almost all of them are pretty old and outdated. I can't find any major reviews that are recent and can only go off benchmarks that I've seen on friends computers with 7770s if I want up to date benchmarks.

This is Wrong, even the GHz Edition is not faster than HD 6850, HD 6850 is about 7-10% faster than the GHz Edition, check your info.

First of all, you should wait till the end of October, the new AMD Piledriver based CPUs (Vishera) is said to have a noticeable performance gain over the fail of Bulldozer. Buying a FX CPU right now is pointless.

You can add $20 and get the HAF 912 case which has a decent look and better airflow, and you need a CPU cooler in case you are going to overclock the CPU, or even if you're not going to OC.

With the very high end card out there, you just need a true quality 500W PSU.

If this build is mainly for gaming and you have a high resolution monitor try to consider a better GPU, right now the HD 7870 retails for $250 and is as powerful as a GTX 580.

Try to get a 1Tb HDD and put in a nice SSD for faster booting and great R/W transfer rates.

You should check your info. It's probably outdated or based on only a few games at a few settings configurations. I agree with the rest of what you say here, except storage, to an extent. There's nothing wrong with going for an SSD and depending on what model and such, it's a great thing to do for pretty much any build, but a 1TB hard drive might be overkill for OP, depending on how many games OP installs and what else OP stores on it.

Also, many 7870s are far cheaper than that. I just wanted to give OP a better option at OP's price point, but I think that like what you did, I should have mentioned a higher end option as well and in not doing that, I can admit that I made a mistake. However, I am quite sure of where the 7770 stands with current drivers.

So you're basing your claims on a magic drivers? So why don't you come with these magic drivers and show us the magical win?

So, is the OP gonna depend on the drivers to play the games? Do these drivers boost only the performance of the HD 7K series?

Do the reviewers have to review each card with the new drivers releases? :lol:

Catalyst 12.7 was shown to be a significant performance boost over previous drivers. Catalyst 12.8 increased performance a little more and the now released Catalyst 12.9 probably did too, but I haven't tested it myself to be sure. Drivers are well-known to improve performance over time on newer cards, so that you didn't know about this surprises the hell out of me.

Also, of course newer drivers only boost HD 7xxx cards (or more accurately, cards with GCN GPUs). The older cards already have had pretty much as much driver optimization as is reasonably possible, but the new cards still have headroom for improvement. Have you never looked at the difference between AMD's performance with the Catalyst 12.7 reviews and the previous reviews? It was enough to make the 7970 go from behind the 670 overall to ahead of the 680 (albeit not be much) and the 7970 GHz Edition increases that lead.

This 7770 is almost exactly as fast as the model that I recommended and even with older drivers, it is superior to the 6850 in all tested resolutions on average, albeit not greatly so. New drivers would increase it's lead, but as the 7770 lacks tests done on modern drivers, you don't care about me telling you guys that. The 7770 averages about 37% more power efficient than the 6850 and at the same price as the reference 6850 that OP had earlier, this is clearly a better card to have.
