Will asus h97 plus motherboard work with i7 4790k?

It will work but would be a waste to pair an H97 w/ a k series processor. To overclock your CPU Multiplier, you need both k series CPU + Z97

Overclocking: Z97 + 4790k
Not Overclocking: H97 + 4790

It will work, and should be just fine. However, I disagree with Jack above. I have an MSI H81 paired with a 4690k and it's OC'd to 4.0GHz. The Z-series is advisable for better stability and faster RAM compatibility. But the H97 should be fine. Read reviews to see if anyone is OCing that board, if you're interested in doing so.

What usually matters is pin configs. The "i" 4-series i5-4XXX, i7-4XXX are 1150 pin configs. Sometimes a BIOS update will be required unless the manufacturer just doesn't want to support it any more.
