I don't know much about technical PC stuff (I.E what part is incompatible with other parts, what part should never be used, etc.), so please excuse any ignorance on my part.

AMD processor: AMD Athlon 5150 Quad Core 1.6GHz Radeon HD 8400 AM1 - Box

Processor cooler: Original AMD CPU Cooler

Motherboard/s: Asus AM1M-A AM1, DDR3 1600, PCI-E, VGA, DVI, HDMI

RAM: G.Skill 2x4GB DDR3 1600Mhz Ares Dual Channel CL9-9-9

Graphics card: AMD Radeon HD 8400 Graphics

Hard disk: Western Digital Caviar Blue WD10EZEX 1TB Sata III

Samsung SH-224DB/BSBS DVD±RW x24 Black Sata

On-board 7.1 Channel Audio

On-board 10/100/1000

Power supply: Golden Tiger 450W Real, 12cm Fan 24pin

Antec One S3 Mid Tower Gaming Black Case (No PSU)

I intend to use this for mid-level gaming (Medium graphics levels on modern games, at least 35+ FPS)

So, any help?

OK, how about replacing the processor with the AMD Richland A10-6800K Quad Core 4.1GHz Radeon HD 8670D FM2 - Box, and the graphics card with the Asus GTX750 OC 1GB GDDR5 VGA DVI HDMI PCI-E. Will this work?

Yes the A10 6800k and GTX750 will work together, but the A10 6800k is known for having a very strong integrated graphics so it costs more, but you wouldn't be using it's integrated graphics, which means you would be paying more for nothing. That's why it isn't smart to buy any AMD A series like the A4, A6, A8, or A10 if you are going to use a separate video card. Is the Athlon x4 760k an option? What about FX4300 or FX6300? If none of these are options you maybe should consider getting an i3.

Hmmm.... The closest option to the FX4300 or FX6300 is the FX-8350 and that's too expensive. And isn't i3 woefully inadequate for gaming?
How about the AMD Richland A6-6400K Dual Core 3.9GHz Radeon HD 8470D FM2 with the Asus Radeon R7 250 1GB GDDR5 DVI VGA HDMI PCI-E graphics card? That's cheaper and seems adequate from my limited research.
