If I have an i5 6400 on a ddr3 based h110 Mobo can I buy a 300 series with ddr4 ram and put my i5 in it. Then later get a coffee lake cpu?

Whats a 300 series? A Kaby Lake system / mobo?


Skylake CPU's work on a 7th gen / Kaby Lake mobos with a BIOS update. (BUT the H110 mobos need a bios update for a Kaby Lake CPU)


But Coffee Lake mobos wont be compatible with Skylake or Kaby Lake CPU's

So if you buy a Coffee Lake CPU, you'll have to buy another mobo that supports it

300 series motherboard for coffee lake since coffee lake isn't supported on older motherboards. I want to upgrade the Mobo and ram first then could later if doable

No the I5 6400 which is a Skylake CPU, wont work / it's not compatible with Coffee Lake mobos

No, you cannot. Just like Coffee Lake doesn't run on 200-series motherboards, Kaby Lake and Skylake do not run on 300-series motherboards.

Well that sucks lol. I have a chance to buy a PC with the i5 6400 and 8gb ddr3 1600mhz ram for $150 and add a gpu for gaming. I guess I'll have to get it and just save for a full coffee lake build later
