[SOLVED] Will this work? Need help

Hello,

So I’m a PC gamer, pretty good at games, PC hardware? Not so much.

And I’m looking to upgrade my computer now that the rtx3000-series is coming out.
So, most of what I have in my pc is crap atm, bought it off a friend for really (really) cheap.

Current specs:
Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 R2.0
CPU: AMD FX(tm)-8320 Eight Core, 3500
RAM: 12 GB of absolute <Mod Edit>
Decent SSD and HDDs
Power Supply: Corsair CX600
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970

So, I have money, but don’t want to throw way to much at this as gaming is not my top priority. From doing some quick searching around, I’ve come to these upgrades:

GPU: GTX 3070
Board: ASUS rob strip b450-f
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600
RAM: 16 GB Corsair Vengeance LPX

Will this be a decent setup, or am I making some obvious mistakes by buying these?

Also, will I need to upgrade my powersupply to a 750W one, or will the one I currently have be sufficient.
Also, will a generic water cooler (no idea what type it is, cooler master something) be sufficient for the setup, or do you have any semi-budget recommendations for the setup?

Thank you for you time,
Sincerely
Kasper Christensen

Hi! Welcome to Tom's forum. :)

Any budget you have in your mind?.

CPU/Motherboard:
I see no issues with your processor as of now and paying extra for 3700x will not change much and save some of your cost. If cost is not an issue then jumping on an Intel CPU makes sense on that price range. I am always a fan of Asus motherboards loaded with features, like their software also their BIOS is quite easy I found. If you like to get an OC headroom, still good but you can look for something cheaper then, the b450 tomahawk max is a great option as well.

PSU:
I would like to know how old is it?.

Display:
What resolution you have decided to play?. or getting a new one?.

and, the build looks fine.
You need a better CPU to pair up with the 3070 or the render time would be bad during gameplay, I would lean toward the Ryzen 7 3700x or the Core i7-10700k or you don't want the overclock. 16 GB is quite enough and the Motherboard will be compatible with 3rd gen Ryzen CPU's. You should be fine with the rest of the parts, You don't need 750 watts you will be fine with 650 bronze or gold.
Recommended System:
CPU: Ryzen 7 3700x Or Core i7-10700k
GPU: RTX 3070
MotherBoard: MSI MAG B550M (AMD) or Gigabyte Z490 (Intel)
PSU: Corsair RMX650x 650 Watt 80+ Gold
Storage: Barracuda 1 TB Hardrive, 512 GB SSD, 128 GB M.2 NvMe SSD
Case: NZXT H510 Elite
CPU cooler: Stock cooler should be fine
Case Fans: Your Choice 🙂

Monitor and Other stuff like keyboard and mouse are also your choice.

Hello,

Thank you so much for the quick feedback, really didn’t expect that!

I got a deal on the 3700x so I got that.
Got The B450-f
Corsair vengeance 16gb

And due to an error in my order (or the “inconvenience” of waiting one more day for it to be processed), they gave me a 40% discount on a Corsair RMX650 which is nice. Didn’t even ask for it. Guess some companies are still decent. (Don’t actually know the age of my current PSU, wont hurt with a new one I suppose)

Hopefully this will work somewhat better than my previous setup. Excited to see what performance increases ill get with my current GPU, but will prob. Increase drastically with the new 3000-series.

I do want to play in 4K, have a monitor that supports it, but havent had the gear to do it. Main reason for the upgrade is to play the new Flight Sim, cant wait to play it in a somewhat decent performance.

Have a great weekend!

Hi, :)

Great! that should do. Still, we don't have any benchmark results of 3070 yet but, running at 4K display should be fine counting the previous generation RTX 2080 ti performance.

and talking about your water cooler, most of them are good. Sometimes pumps can be faulty but that's fine if you are covered under the warranty period and needs periodical maintenance as well. Now, air coolers can be cheap and would suggest staying away from beefy models as it kills space as well as have a chance to bend or damage your motherboard. Some manufacturers provides solid backplate if properly mount then it's okay. Just take these points before going for one otherwise, water cooling is a better option imo.

I think I’ll have a closer look at the cooler when I install the new parts, will install them in a complete new cabinet that my friend is giving away. I’ll just try the default cooler to begin with. Will check the running temperatures once I’ve gotten everything set up, if needed I’ll look closer into the water cooler.

The stock cooler is good to start with, as mostly the temperature varies between 40-50 c when idle and 70-80 c on load with base clock speed. Running your computer12/24 hrs straight will also change those figures as well (mostly a little higher). In that case, the suggestion comes for aftermarket coolers to maintain a stable temperature.

Make sure your cabinet has good airflow intake from the front, especially which has front mesh.
