I want to buy a Q87M-E from Asus. This board requires an 8 pin CPU power connector, my power supply has a single 4 pin connector for the cpu. Will it be able to boot with a single 4 pin connector? I would be pairing it with an i5 4670 non-k so no overclocking. I've seen benchmarks with this cpu only drawing about 55 watts at full load while a 4 pin EPS connector is rated at 144w so it should work as long as the motherboard allows it to boot.

In the motherboard manual it says:

DO NOT forget to connect the 4-pin/8-pin ATX +12 volt power plug. Otherwise, the system will not boot up. So I'm guessing either one is fine and will work but I am still not sure because it doesn't explicitly say that.

Technically, yes, it should work fine with that CPU and with only a single 4 pin EPS connector attached. As to whether your PSU is up to the task of supporting this configuration, that greatly depends on what other hardware you are running in terms of graphics card, other add in cards, storage devices and the model of the PSU as well as how old it is.

If you ONLY want to know whether it can technically support it, then the answer is that it should. If you want to know whether it's a good idea or might have issues NOT related to only having a 4 pin EPS connected, then we need more information.

Oh yeah, it's just a 300w power supply from an old dell optiplex, as far as I know, even though short in total power output, they're high quality power supplies, it's even got a 80 plus titanium certification. I would be pairing it with a low profile gpu (probably an rx 550) and 3 sata drives.

include the power supply make & model.
and if it has been in use previously; how long?
