Will this work?

I have an MSI Aegis I bought as a build through ABS. It has a MS-B901 MoBo and an Intel i5-6500. I was playing around with some upgrades, did the graphics card no issue and thought I'd do the CPU. I got the Intel i7-7700K which uses the same LGA 1151 socket and had the same power draw. First one came and did not work. Computer would turn on but no image to monitor or power to keyboard/mouse. I was concerned it was the MoBo but after looking at this thread:

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/284127-28-want-compatible-computer

and looking it up on CPU Upgrade:

http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-MSI/B150_GAMING_M3.html

It looks like I should be able to support it, BIOS version is 8.00

Can anyone help? Newegg RMA'ed the CPU but I'm trying to confirm I'm right before doing the install again.

Thank you

If your mobo is still working i would go for a skylake i7. They have the same ipc like kaby lake so there isn't a big difference in performance between these generations.

The i7 6700 would be perfect since it seems oc is not possible with that mobo.
If run CPU-Z https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html It should tell you the exact motherboard model # you have. The MS-B901 just sends me to the generic Ageis desktop build and not a specific motherboard.

The problem with prebuilds is they don't always (in fact they usually never do) use standard off the shelf motherboards and don't receive the full BIOS update support that would enable you to use any CPUs other than the ones they sell it with, let alone upgrade to the next generation models.

But as it stands I'm not seeing any indication that desktop lineup received a BIOS update to support Kaby Lake CPUs.

Currently trying to flash that using a USB drive and I'm getting a message "d4- error: the system DMI data size is greater than ROM file's DMI data length" absolutely no idea what that means
