I want to upgrade my graphics card but I do not know if my mobo will support it. My mobo is an ASRock z77 pro 3 the card I want to upgrade to is a r9 290x 4gb by xfx

Well it does have a PCI3.0 X16 slot and a backup 2.0 X16 slot, so I don't see why not. Just make sure that you have the latest BIOS and that your PSU can handle it because r9 290x are notorious for sapping out a lot of power.
