Will Thunderbolt 3 devices (e.g. an external GPU dock) work on USB C ports?

I am getting a laptop that only has USB C not Thunderbolt. I don't care if it is slow but I wanna use my GTX 1060 on the laptop to get a bit more performance. Is this possible with an eGPU dock like the razer core or would it get too severely bottle-necked?

No, it needs to be a thunderbolt port. It won't work at all.
Thunderbolt 3 uses PCI-Express Lanes
USB Type C uses USB.
They both use the same cable type.

and when I plug it into the USB Type C on my mini desktop & connect HDMI to it, it displays just fine to a TV/monitor(even as the default display).

Of course I realize a simple video output isn't the same as a dedicated PCI-E lane for a gaming card... but if I had a Thunderbolt 3 eGPU I'd try and plug it in anyway.
