Will upgrading from a Pentium D E6700, to a Q6600, improve perfomance?

Hi, Mike2012 here. Currently I have a Pentium Dual Core E6700@3.2ghz. It runs pretty well on most games, however, in games that require more than 2 cores like BF3 or most console ports for instance, it doesn't perform that well. Heck, I've played games like Assassin's Creed: Revelations that are almost unplayable on a Dual Core.

Now, I would do a major upgrade to the Core i7 or something, but my motherboard only supports LGA775 socket CPU's. And I'm not looking to spend more than around $200.

Anyways, I looked online and found a used Core 2 Quad Q6600@2.4ghz on Amazon that costs like $60, which is pretty cheap. But would I see a big performance boosts in games, or should I save up around $130 for a Core 2 Extreme QX6700@2.6ghz?

Also, are there any good tutorials out there, for removing the heatsink and the old CPU safely?

It has nothing to do with being a dual core CPU. A dual core I3 can play all those games just fine. Your problem is the Pentium D old and slow. It's pretty much two crappy single core Pentium 4's glued to the same chip. Will the Core 2 quad be better than the Pentium D, yes but it's still kind of old.

You're incorrect, it's not two crappy Pentium 4's glued into the same chip. That's the Pentium D, and Pentium 4's are okay in my book. He has a Core based Pentium processor. Which is okay, but yes, if you can get a Core 2 Quad and your motherboard supports it, go for it!
