Will upgrading to a 1080 make a noticable diference in VR?

Ive done alot of looking around and seem to be finding conflicting information so I will just ask here directly. My PC:

I5-4570 (3.2 ghz)
Gtx 980
500w psu (I think)
3440 x 1440 monitor
8GB DDR3
Motherboard intel H81
And an oculus rift.

I want to upgrade to a 1070ti or 1080. 1st can my cpu handle it? 2nd, is there any noticeable diference in visual quality inside VR either at 1st or with supersampling? How close to maxing out the most demanding games will I get?

your bottleneck in this system is the CPU not your GPU, if you want the best performance gains, upgrade to an i7-7700k or i7-8700k
