Will using an EPS cable affect my GTX970 which requires a 8Pin Power Connection?

Hi there,

I have a Corsair X500M Modular power supply. One of the ports allows me to plug in an 8pin power cable so I am able to power the 8 pin power port on my Asus GTX 970.

I have an EPS (CPU) CABLE that fits in the PSU end and I am able to squeeze in the GPU end with difficulty but it fits,

My question is this - Will my CABLE affect my GPU? Or are all cables the same, again I am plugging it into the PCIe port but just using a different cable.

Would it be best to get a PCIe 6+2 cable instead?

Solution

Like for example lets say you're looking at the connectors of both sides of the EPS cable and on one side the top right pin, the wire goes to the bottom left pin on the other side. But on the PCIe cable it goes to the top left on the other connector. Thats pinned differently
Do not use the EPS cable for your graphic card. It's is only for connecting the EPS slot on your motherboard.
You have to use a pcie 6+2 pin plug for your graphic card. You may have possibly damage your graphic card.

With the CX500m the 4+4 pin EPS cpu cable is hardwired from the psu. You should have one modular cable that has two 6+2 pin plugs. You should use that fro your graphic card.

Even if you plugged the EPS cable in to the PCIe plug, it is pinned differently than the PCIe cable. There is a reason why they key it differently. Do not use this cable, buy the correct cable unless you want to be buying yourself a new GTX 970 when you destroy yours.

I have the 4+4 Cable from my PSU already plugged into my motherboard but here I'm in need of a cable for my new GPU and the only cable I have is an EPS one, do you know if it matters about the type of cable I'm using if I can get it to fit? It will be drawing power from the correct port on the PSU (The PCIe 8pin port)

As I said it is pinned differently than a PCIe cable. Do not use it.

Alright will heed your advice :wahoo: , are you able to explain more about this? What do you mean by pinned differently?

No it's another 4+4 (8pin) EPS cable but it's detachable and I'm missing the 6+2 one 🙁

Okay thank you very much for this, I'm glad I asked before I plug it in and it goes *bang*

I bought it from maplin (UK Retailer) but the box went missing along with a bunch of cables, including the 6+2 pin cable. I had been using a card that didn't require a power supply before (750ti) so only a problem now. Thanks for all your help though, wont be destroying a new GPU today :)

Well, there is no retailers that would sell you a corsair modular 6+2 cable from your psu. You can try your luck with asking Corsair if they can send you a replacement cable but the chances are very slim to none. You would be better off buying a newer psu and next time don't throw/misplace away any cables that you not using yet with your power supply.
