Will using VGA to DVI adaptor work on an old pc?

Hello everyone

I'm facing troubles with my old pc. I have a VGA cable which has 15 pins and is male to male. I can connect it to my monitor, but my computer has a 9 pins male VGA connector, so it won't work.
I'm thinking to buy a VGA female to DVI male adapter, but my question is: will it work? It's a really old pc, but I don't want to destroy it.

That 9-pin connector sounds like an older serial port. VGA ports typically have a blue center. What is the make/model of your PC or its motherboard make/model?

I'm using VGA to DVI adapter everyday on my PC and there is no problems with that.

That is a case, not a PC make/model. Do you know if you have a dedicated (stand alone) video card installed? Or, are you using an integrated (part of motherboard) video adapter?
