Will Windows 10 be a resource hog?

You can always turn off Aero on Windows 7. Making it unavailable to select (though it is still there) was one of the ways Windows 8 was optimized for the lack of decent integrated graphics. Running touch screens plus aero has apparently too much for most of the Y and U class processors they wanted to put in tablets.

And OS are always amazingly fast when you install them fresh. They get slower over time as you install more stuff.
A lot of the optimization in Windows 8 and 8.1 came from the lack of good integrated GPUs available in the average PC (Laptops really). Now that those are significantly better they don't have as much reason to optimize I would think.

I doubt it would be too noticeable either way. Unless your are trying to put it on a quite old platform.

The machines I have performance issues with don't have the necessary instruction sets to run 8.1, but some will run 8. It is hard to tell the difference aside from the much faster boot times of 8 but that isn't really performance related. Problem is with the faster systems at my disposal it is night and day and very hard to compare them.

New Os's are designed to work on the new technology and optimized for the new technology. Some time installing on older hardware you may not get as much advantage as using newer technology. The biggest problem with performance is 32 bit versus 64 bit.

Windows 8 was more efficient then XP and Windows 7 especially with Metro apps. Metro apps basically run like web apps where they run on less powerful processors. XP is the least efficient because it has a memory restriction of a little over 3 gb. Windows 7 and up have much higher memory usage capabilites because they are 64 bit. A newer OS is always more efficient as they are designed on to run newer hardware.

I work in IT and just this am I had a client say her app was failing on her XP machine. She was trying to print a check and the app just died. I have the same app on my machine and I said well let see if it's the app or server or the XP machine. She came to my machine WIN 7 8 gb machine and it worked super fast. So we're expediting her replacement Win 7 machine. We are testing Win 8 and performance is better then 7.

I had this old Toshiba Portege R500-S5006V which had a Core 2 Duo U7700 1.33 GHz 2 GB RAM 500 GB HDD and Windows 7 32 was a slug on it. I clean installed 10 TP x64 on it and it ran like greased lightning so to speak. Also because of no Aero effects Windows 10 should consume less energy than 7.
