I've heard a bunch of people saying that windows update screwed up their pc. I never experienced that yet. Will it happen to me though?

2004? I've had it updated now for about a week without issues.

Unlikely.
With every major update, some few systems have issues. And of course the gloom and doom articles from the media only reinforce that thought.

I've updated several of my systems to v2004, nary a problem.
Of course, have a known good backup, just in case.

No two machines are exactly alike. You need to be prepared for worst case at all times. However, you never read about the 99+ percent that have no problems whatsoever. Bottom line is not to worry about it.
