Hi. I went to run > netplwiz > and unchecked "users must enter username and password to use this computer" option but win 10 still asks for a login password. I also went to settings > accounts > signin options > and chose "never" for when windows should require a sign in. So is it a bug with windows?

Solution
Yes, you use netplzwiz like you were, but you need the password to do it. It won't let you disable it without you entering the password in the field in that

win 10 was a free upgrade from win 7 which i think i bought long time ago.

i believe that win 10 started asking for the password after activation which i linked the windows to my microsoft account. It seems like theres no way to turn this off?

Try to disable the group policy named "Require a Password when the computer wakes". See method 2:

I hope this helps!

That is normal, it wants the admin password to enable the ability to login without a password, as it uses that password to silently log you into win 10 every start without showing the screen

The password it wants is the password you have given win 10 in association with that email address. If you don't know what that is, you can reset it via: https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/12429/microsoft-account-sign-in-cant

This is old advice, it worked perfectly fine for 2 years but recently I have read netplwiz doesn't always work anymore.

see if this helps
There are two types of user accounts in Windows 10 besides Standard and Administrator accounts. The types I am referring to are Microsoft and Local accounts. Microsoft user accounts are associated with the user's Microsoft account, and facilitate using other Microsoft functions, such as syncing with other Microsoft devices, and using Microsoft Cloud services like OneDrive and Office 365 Home or Personal.

Local user accounts are limited to the computer on which they are defined. They do not communicate or share information with other Microsoft devices or cloud services.

This is relevant to your problem because Microsoft user accounts require passwords, and Local user accounts do not. Your user account is probably a Microsoft account, and that is why the NETPLWIZ configuration change is not working. If you switch to a Local account, you will not be required to define a password for the account, and will not need to enter a password during Windows startup, regardless of NETPLWIZ settings. Of course, you will lose the benefits that a Microsoft account provides, but if you don't have other Windows devices and don't use MS cloud services, the impact should be minor. The procedure for switching from a Microsoft account to a Local account is pretty simple, and is described here: https://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-10-tip-switch-back-to-a-local-account-from-a-microsoft-account/.

As I said, I haven't tested this solution, but I found at least one post from a user who had previously tried the NETPLWIZ solution without success, reporting that this solution worked for him. If you decide to try this, please update your post and let us know your experience.

how to make local account - https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/4026923/windows-10-create-a-local-user-or-administrator-account

before you say you don't want to download anything again, you don't need to. Make the local account admin and copy contents of current users folder in c:\users\username onto the new user's folder and they will have the same access to everything 1st user has. It takes 10 minutes max. Just need to set up browsers, steam and maybe Onedrive (if you had it before). I am using a local user right now.
