Question Win 11 and MS Office updating experiences

I would like to pass on my experience with a Windows 11 system I had. I like to spend the cooler days indoors by playing around with computers. I'm no expert, to say the least, but I have a home-built so-called gamer I tossed together many years ago. An older MSI board with and processor (probably Gen2?) that Microsoft reported as "over ten years old". And it likely was.

I had subscribed to the Windows insider program many years ago and along the way, being on the "fast track" MS updated this machine to Win11 all on its own. And it ran perfectly well for many months, even past the original release of 11. It even updated regularly. It ran so well that I became dependent on this machine. Until the 1TB, Hitachi hard drive decided to take a crap. I had previously tried to clone the drive to a new 1 TB SSD and it appeared that all went well. (I had my doubts about the Hitachi and wanted to be prepared.) It would post, find the drive and start the Windows process which at that point it would freeze. So, I decided to do a clean install.

Once I started the ISO, it quickly informed me my machine was not capable of installing Win 11. Bye! So, I installed Win 10 thinking it may then update to 11 as it had in the past. It wouldn't. Even after trying all of the workarounds, it wouldn't load. It just seems strange to me that a machine that did run Win 11 so well, now isn't good enough. And I'm sure MS knew it. So much for "assisting and making "Windows" better by participating in their "Insider Program". Thank you but now we need money.

For those wondering if you should upgrade to Windows 11, I will say I would recommend it. I was perfectly happy with the original install MS did and had absolutely no issues during that time. I have now moved on to a new "Build your own" with current hardware and again all seems to work great. (After what seems to be the normal installation issues) So, after all of these years of a love-hate relationship with Microsoft I'm happy with their current products, but once again dissatisfied with their policies, support, and sales.

One last thing. They will not provide an ISO for older MS Office versions any longer. Nor will the disc installs load in Win 11. (At least for me) They just want to stuff their monthly online crap down your throat, like it or not. After digging around for a few days, I did find a free version of Excel and Word on the MS site. And that seems to run fine. But you have to dig very deep to find it. And, I guess all of those DVDs Microsoft sold me are now good for nothing. Oh well!

What version of Office cannot be installed on Win 11?

"free version of Excel and Word on the MS site.".................can you provide a link?

As I said, it's buried deep. If you Google "Free Office excel and word" you will find references to it. It's a complete download that installs both apps on your machine. Not an internet version. I even disconnected the web to test it as I didn't believe it was truly independent of the MS servers. But, apparently, it is.

I'll keep digging to see if I can find it again and post it when I do.

As for loading the older versions of office, I need to add that my new machine doesn't have a DVD reader (or even a place to install one. So I have been using a new USB DVD reader which constantly comes back with an error message. When I do get past that, when I enter the activation code it returns another invalid activation code. Likely due to it being installed on some other machine.

So, I guess I should have said "I" can't load Office on "my" new Win 11 machine. For whatever reason. That's why I was hoping to find a downloadable ISO. which MS is not willing to provide.

You’re talking about the document reader that they provide. It probably isn’t compatible with windows 11 if you can’t afford office, you’re going to have to use LibreOffice or alternate suire

I've been using Word and Excel since Dos versions. (Word Perfect, Lotus, and even Visicalc on Apple) I think I know a "document reader" when I see one. It's installed on this Win 11 machine and it works just fine. It may not have all the fancy functions of Office 360, (I really don't know) but it does have all of the functions I use. It runs offline, It recalls, edits, and saves docs off all of my drives including across my home network, and saves them back where they came from. No need to download the file from the servers as when using 360. When online, it does access what few files have snuck on "Onedrive" over the years. What more could I ask for?

I will admit. I have no idea what "LibreOffice" might be. So I won't comment on that. I guess I'm one of the few folks that occasionally use computers for something other than games. Although, my main reason for the recent upgrade was to run MS Flight Sim efficiently. After losing my FAA medical, it's about all of the flying I get these days.

LibreOffice is a free open source alternative to MS Office.
Almost but not quite 100% compatible with existing Office files. And any incompatibilities are way out on the fringes.
