win 2000 networking

my windows 2000 machines are slow in connecting to other computers, both at my home network (peer to peer win 95 and win ME) and at the office (novell) the slowness comes when I try to make a new connection, connections to mapped drives are OK. Has anyone else experienced this and have a solution?

You really need to go dig around in technet methinks.

Get rid of any extra protocols and be sure the service access order has the primary protocol you want to use at the top.
