Did you install you VIA M/B chipset 4 in 1 drivers at initial install of W2k? If not you may want to go to the <A HREF="http://usa.asus.com/mb/socketa/a7v/overview.htm" target="_new">ASUS</A> website and download the latest drivers, and/or BIOS, along with the instructions.

Another possibility could be mouse drivers. There are some known issues with Logitech v.8.x mouse drivers.

<font color=blue>"Important Information: Do not install any version of MouseWare 8.x (or earlier) into Windows 2000. It may crash your Windows 2000, forcing you to reinstall Windows 2000."</font color=blue> <A HREF="http://www.logitech.com/cf/support/28.cfm" target="_new">http://www.logitech.com/cf/support/28.cfm</A>

However, you may not even have a Logitech mouse, just trying to help with brainstorm. Your problem sounds like a software conflict somewhere in your system.
