WIN 2k slow down when using CDROM

Hi I am just wondering if anyone experienced the same problem. I have win2000 installed under WINME with dual boot option. Whenever I tried to use my plextor burner or my creative dvd rom (copyng file from cdrom to hd or buring cds)it always slowed down my system a lot(the mouse becomes really slow and the IE load pages really slow). However I had none of these problems when using WINME. I tried to enable DMA under IDE controllers for both primary and secondary controllers but still nothing changed. One thing i did notice though, is that for primary ide channel it's ultra dma mode under device 0, pio mode under device 1.Then under secondary ide channel it's pio mode on device 0 and not applicable under device 1. all four of them are highlighted with "DMA if available" does anyone know how to solve this? Please let me know
Thanks

It's quite strange, as both your DVD and CDRW should support DMA.

Have you enabled DMA in your bios?

At least in my case, I can't use DMA in Windows 2000 unless I enable it in both the OS and BIOS, but if I enable both in WinME, I can't boot WinME.

SEARCH FIRST, THEN POST

My Plextor burner shows up as pio 4 in the bios startup screen. In win2k it uses dma. Dma in windows is not the same as udma in bios. The burner ran in pio mode by default in win2k and I got my moneys worth of Burn-Proof right away! I enabled dma for the burner and now it runs great. Please list your devices and where they are connected so we can better understand your situation. IE.

ide primary:
master - hard drive (udma)
slave - none

ide secondary:
master - burner (dma)
slave - none

This is my setting:
IDE Primary:
Master : Harddrive (udma)
Slave: Creative DVD (PIO)

IDE Secondary:
Master-Plextor Burner (PIO)
Secondary: none;

also for primary i did not use Ultra DMA 66 cable because it won't fit into the creative dvd rom.
Thanks

also shall I enable DMA under my bios? i don't know if it's worthwhile to give it a shot.

I just checked the settings under my bios:

OnBoard IDE I Controllers:
Master Drive PIO Mode: Auto(I have the option to switch to Mode 0,1,2,3,4)
Slave Drive PIO Mode: auto

Master Driver Mode Ultra DMA: auto(only have the option of auto or disable)
slave driver mode ultra dma: auto

same for Onboard IDE II controllers

Your bios settings are correct. Your choice for where to connect the drives are also correct. The ata66 cable should have the exact same connectors as the old 40 wire cables, so it should work. I believe your slowdown is definately caused by the pio mode. When I first installed my ata100 drive under win2k it ran in pio mode and my 1gig tbird system ran like a 486! I changed the drive to ata66 and win2k ran it in udma mode my system ran great. So, when your copying cd's and have two drives working in pio mode the slowdown doesn't suprise me. I bet that win98 was using dma, thus the better system performance. Your plextor should run in dma mode and I would like to believe that the dvd player should as well. If possible use ata66 80 wire cables for all your drives. What plextor burner are you using? I've have the 12/10/32 and have flashed the bios to 1.07. Another person on this board was having problems with dma mode also. I wonder if it might be the cable or the bios. I would recommend using an ata66 cable and 1.07 bios, as that setup works for me. To see what mode your devices are actually running in bios at startup you can boot with a floppy and the screen showing the modes will stay on the screen long enough to read it. Let me know what it says as it may help diagnose the problem.

Hi my system configuraion is this:
Athlon classic 700 MHz
Abit KA7
IBM Desktop 27GB
Plextor 12/10/32 with 1.07 firmware

One thing though: i can't use ultra dma 66 cable because i couldn't attach it to both HD and my dvd rom. The cable doesn't fit into the dvd rom. The only option i have left is that i hook my plextor and dvd rom together on secondary IDE controller, which would hury my buring process as NERO told me.
any good ideas?

First off, the reason for putting your cd drives on different controllers is that the controller can only communicate with one device at a time, which would hamper cd copying if their both on the same controller. Is the problem with connecting the hd and dvd due to the connector or just physical location that prohibits connecting them both? What type of cable are you using with the plextor? I'm curious as to why it's not running in dma since it's the only device hooked up to the secondary controller. Use an 80 wire cable and hook the drive up to the end connector. What speed are you buring at? Does the buffer run out and have to refill during cd copying? If all drives were running in dma mode it would be fastest to use the dvd for reading and the burner for writing, but if the dvd is not keeping up it may be faster to use one drive for the copy. I.E. use your fastest drive to write an image to the hd then burn it to the plextor, assuming you can get the plextor to run in dma mode. As previously stated, my burner was slow as [-peep-] until I put in it dma mode. Which version of nero are you using? Version 5 shows the buffer status, which when my burner was in pio mode, would empty and then have to refill when writing from my hd. You could try hooking the burner up as slave on the primary and the dvd as master on the secondary which would help cd copying but might hinder burning from the hd. If you have a fast hd and dma is enable on both the hd and burner it might work ok. Try these suggestions and let me know the results. We'll get you squared away eventually (-:

Ok I used the normal cable to hook up my plextor.
as for not being able to hook up the dma 66 cable is due to the connector (different connector for 66 and dvd rom)
I normally burn it at 12x and it's ok except i won't be able to do multi tasking b/c it's way too slow. yes i do use Nero 5 and your description is exactly what happened.
just out of curiosity: can i hook up the dma 66 cable directly to my plextor and put it as primary of secondary controllers?
