Win 7 has suddenly started to freeze on the desktop after startup. The cursor moves but nothing happens when I click on an item. Then it thaws after up to five minutes and works perfectly.

There has been no hw changes for months.

Is there a log file I can examine to find out what is going on?

Solution
start > run > type msconfig, go to startup tab and disable unnecessary startup items.

start > in search type cmd, right click cmd, run as administrator
type chkdsk C: /f , this will check your hard drive for errors.

Again in command prompt type sfc /scannow this will check your system files for errors.

You can also run "disk cleanup" to delete unwanted files like temp files.
