I am working with someone's 2 HP 6000 Pro Compaq desktop computers/Windows 7. He has wifi service, but does not have a wireless adapter.
I do. I took them and am working on them. They have minimal software, and I used my wireless USB NIC to get each one going, update, one at a time.
One works just fine. The other hangs on startup. The Windows icon moves, so it is not completely frozen. If I 'hard 'shut it off, then restart it, I get 2 options:
"Repair" (I think - something like that). I tried that option, didn't help
"Start Windows Normally" - that one always works
This happens every other start up.
[update to orignal post]: I just left it alone, and it took 40 minutes to go from "Starting Windows" to logging in.
I've tried a lot, and have read articles, such as http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-7/ultimate-troubleshooting-guide-for-windows-7-hanging-issues/. Maybe it's hardware. Seems like there's many options. Mainly I've tried:
I have a feeling the event viewer would tell me what it is. Trouble is, I don't know exactly where to look. I've also considered memory and hard drive tests. I'll run one of those and update with results.
Update: Ran both memory and hard drive tests - they came out fine.
In the meantime, does anyone have an idea?

msconfig/startup - disabled everything
msconfig/services - disabled all non-Microsoft items
removed single 2 GB memory stick, put it another slot, rebooted, got error, switched back to original spot
booted into safe mode on expected hang cycle, got in, then rebooted normally
