Hello
I just got a laptop from an old client, im guessing they are using a volume license or an OEM license, i want to rebuild the windows with the same key, would the owner of the volume license be able to find the IP or any information about the Laptop after ive rebuilt it ?

thanks

Solution

If it still boots and runs, install and run Belarc Advisor
It will return the OS info. Both the Product ID and the License Key.

The Product ID might have the letters OEM in the middle somewhere.

1. Are you using this same license?
2. Have you done a full wipe and reinstall of the OS?
3. For a VLK, they'd have to go through Microsoft to find any info. And even then, probably not. OEM license, not at all.

I would think.. no, not really.
With time, said volume license would not validate itself on their volume licensing server (referred to also as Key management service, which uses local own server to activate windows instead of online) though and be marked as lost/stolen/invalid and your windows would one day turn out to be unactivated.

If it is OEM license, it is just tied to the hardware on laptop and besides that, has no other strings attached.

at the moment im a bit stuck as i dont know the local logic credentials its on a domain still. and i would prefer to use the same license that it currently has
no but i want to using the Code already on there

A volume license will want to talk to a Key server and Domain for authentication.
Which you don't have.

And this system needs a full wipe and reinstall. Which you can't do without it contacting that VLK server.

You got a free laptop.
Actually, you got a $100 laptop. $100 = the cost of buying your own OS for it.

true, how would i check if it was a OEM or volume

is belarc advisor a bootable program? because i currently cant get on the desktop at all

I think it needs to actually be installed.
At this point, bite the bullet and buy your own OS for it. It is asking to log on to a domain, and authenticate the license.

Ive emailed the account manager i may be able to get the local login details
