Win 7 System restore resetting it's available usage after I set it

I have Win 7 Ultimate 64bit installed on a 120Gb Kingston Hyper X SSD. With the OS and programs installed on the SSD I'm usually around 60 to 70 Gb used of the available 111 Gb on the SSD.

Last week I noticed that this drive was in the red on My Computer and had crept up to less than 10Gb free. I went through the usual culprits and found that System Restore was set to use a max 50% of disk space. I like ot have at least some restore points as it's saved me a couple times in the past. So I set the slider to 15% max usage, clicked Apply and OK, and regained back nearly 50Gb of space on the drive. I checked it a couple days later and it had reset itself back to using a max potential 50% of the drive space. I reset it to 15%, it deleted the necessary Restore Points and I again reclaimed the space. Now again, a few days later it has reset itself back to using 50%.

btw, I have it set to "Restore system settings and previous versions of files"

Under System Properties > System Protection> Local Disk C > Configure, where the slider is and the settings are, it says:

"You can adjust the maximum disk space used for system protection. As space fills up, older restore points will be deleted to make room for new ones."

But ti looks like what is actually happening is that as space fills up, rather than deleting old restore points it is resetting the slider to 50% to accommodate new restore points that it's creating.

Is there another setting somewhere that I'm missing, or is it just not accepting the values I set for some reason? What would cause this?

Thanks

I may have an answer! Are any of you using Avast! antivirus?
While googling around I found this thread on the Avast! forums: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=162041.0
According to this thread, this may be caused by the "NG" piece of the new version of Avast!, meaning you just have to go into control panel, programs and features, select Avast!, click CHANGE (not uninstall), and deselect the NG feature, as well as any others you don't use or are premium features like Grimefighter, Remote Assistance, SecureLine, and the gadget.
Hope I helped at least one of you!
Very strange since 50% of disk space is way higher than the Windows default of up to 10%.

Are you clicking 'OK' after adjusting the slider, to save your preferred setting? I only ask because I've seen people change a setting then just 'X' out of the window which of course doesn't save the changes..

Thanks, yes, after adjusting the slider I'm clicking Apply then OK. I set it to 12% usage yesterday, in order to intentionally delete a few restore points, so I can see what happens over the next few days - whether it will create more and increase the amount it uses, or just delete old points and keep below 12%. So at this point I'm just monitoring it. I'll post back when I see what happens over the next few days.

I am having a similar issue. I have Win 7 Ultimate, 128g sandisk ssd with OS and apps, 1tb WD Black hdd with games and media. I am trying to turn the system protection off on the hdd and at 10% for the ssd, but they both keep resetting to 50%. I can't seem to find any discussion on this except for this thread. Does anyone have an update on this?

I checked and my system restore had increased to 50% again. I do have Avast. So I did just what you and the Avast thread mentioned. I changed the install and unchecked NG. Grimefighter and a few others. Judging by the Avast thread I think you've nailed it. I'll give it a few days again to see if it goes over my setting of 12% now. Thanks Starcruiser, I'll check back here again and let you know.

OK, so after monitoring this for a couple weeks now it appears to be holding the settings I input - it's staying at the 12% I set. So it appears you nailed it. It was changing the settings in Avast that made the difference.
Thanks, +1

THANKS A LOT. I'm gonna try this. For weeks i've been wondering WHY Windows was constantly switching the slider to 50% of hdd usage. I'm going to try this and see what happen.
Because of that issue, Windows is sometime using 300go of goddamn "restore points"...
