Which do you prefer and briefly state why this is so.

(I'm aware that there are other forums that answer this, but i'd
rather have the answer come to me over digging through people's
trolling.)

I use Win 7 but was thinking of upgrading. I understand that in the IT world, Win 7 is
the favorite.

Why is this?
What does 7 offer, that 8.1 doesn't?

.....Or, is it just the UI everyone hates?

FLY, YOU FOOLS!

Solution
99% it is the Win 8/8.1 UI.
And a lot of those are from people who have never used it beyond a minute or two. Or never.

Performance is very, very similar.
Win 8/8.1 will get further DirectX version, 12 and beyond. Win 7 won't.

Win 8.1 can be made to boot directly into the Desktop, and looks a whole lot like Win 7. I rarely see any Metro business.

If you have 7 and like it, there is little reason to change to 8.1 now. Wait for Windows 10
If on a new build, there is little reason to avoid 8.1.
Windows 7 has RAID. 8.1 has smaller size, faster boot, and more features as well as a longer clock before death. 8.1 has the lovely desktop everyone loves and doesn't ever have to even see the app interface. Some compatibility issues still exist for various programs, but modern software works fine.
