Thanks, I have the product key but because it's a volume licence it will not work on my new SSD drive. I purchased the Laptop with win 8.1n on it then upgraded to the SSD cloning the old drive. I have contacted Microsoft and they asked for the licence details which I don't have so I wonder if there is a way of activating without purchasing a new key.
You need the product key for the activation. Check the back of your PC for a label. You can also try this: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows-8/a/windows-8-product-key.htm

Why wouldn't it work on your SSD? As for as I know the key is tied to your motherboard, not the SSD/HDD.
I assume it's Microsoft being over concerned about piracy but I have tried the key and contacted them (they say the key is active) and they asked me to get the details of the volume licence, which I can't do as the seller does not have them.
