I have the following CD (have had it quite a while) - a Microsoft Select Windows 98 (July 1998) Burgundy Edition installation CD. This is what I currently run on my computer.

Win98SE - what is the difference between SE and the original??

And for the RAM question - do applications or games utilize anything over 128mb of RAM - or are Win98 users just out of luck?? I am about to get a 1x256 chip of Crucial CAS2 - and want to make sure that my Win98 will use it.

Thanks all.

I think win 98 second edition is a lot more stable then the first edition. The second edition also include internet connection sharing. Win 98 support up to 512 MB of RAM. According to M$ it will run better with more RAM.

That is funny you mention that piece of Memory, I have it. My copy of 98se uses up my memory. The biggest memory hog I use is Unreal/UT. They eat up all of the RAM and VMem. Just open the System monitor and watch it get used. Windows runs faster if you leave your computer on, because Windows will allocate a larger Disk Cache, and therefore reduce your HDD usage. Weirdest thing though. I had trouble with one of those BXTuners. I made the change that said you have to have high quality CAS2 memory, and as soon as I ran Q3, my system locked. I turned off Pre-Charge control and it worked fine. But WinTune told me my memory performance dropped. I set it back to the defaults.

in my experience Windows 98 original is the most stable 9x OS Microsoft has ever released. I've run it constantly for weeks, never had a problem. 98 SE requires a reboot at least once a week, more often once a day.
screw'em both, run 2000.

Nawwwww - Win2000 is NT-based, and will not run my older games (yes, have checked the sites).

I have never had a big problem with Win98 original (the one mentioned on the first post) - but I have never run Win98SE and did not know the differences besides the MSIE bundle (which is a free download).

Thanks for the info - I might just stick with what I have, as there does not seem to be a huge reason for me to use Win98SE over Win98.

Thanks all. Time to go buy my parts :)

I use win98SE and will strongly recommend it. Mine virtually never crashes. However if your current system is stable, and you don't need the new featurs - then don't fix it if it aint broke.

98SE most compatable for my pc and Hardware. Tried Me and W2K. Not fun at all. Just my sys though.

98 and memory sucks. It does not like a lot of memory. As far as using it, it uses more memory up quicker. Have probs with running out of resources with 256MB. As far as the basics of using memory. Your basic parts of the apps being used get stored there for quick retreival. The more memory you have the more it will put in.
As you run more apps it gets rid of less used apps to virtual memory (which is your hard drive and is very slow compared to RAM).
