With no standby allowed, monitor to shut down after 15 minutes and hard disk to turn off after 30 minutes I have never once seen the hard drive spin down. Previously under Win 98 SE and Win 2000 Professional I have had no problems with my rig and this power setting.

I have crippled all the new "features" in Win ME, such as system restore, and still my monitor powers off but hard drive continues to spin.

I have noticed that my hard drive is constantly being tagged about every minute or so. Thus preventing the hard drive from entering a state of no activity to start the timer running on power off.
I cannot find the thread on my machine that is doing this to my poor hard drive. Any thoughts?

Do you have any software installed such as Microsoft FindFast? That will do what you describe. How about a screensaver? Many screensavers will continue to run after the system should be on standby. This will continue to hit the hard drive also.

Hey,

He's right, you should also make sure you don't have many, or any backround apps running, some prevent standby. Aslo certain drivers do it to.

I have win2000 and I had the same problems. But I after uninstalling Adaptec DirectCD evrything worked fine again. That's why I ditched DCD.

Welp, it looks the default screen saver (rotating pictures from the new my pictures folder). Thanks for all the feed back and suggestions.
