Win ME vs. Win2k for games

Which would you prefer for gamming? WinME? or Win2k? Most of the games I have will run on 2k. Not all are supported but they work fine. I really hate system crashes which is why I use 2k. Any reason why I should go for ME? My setup is:

1.4ghz Athlon
512MB DDR
Radeon 64DDR

Am I the only person of this forum that seems to prefer WinME for gaming to anything else? When it was initially released it was a pain in the ass to get running, but I think the drivers have improved over time. I dont have any problems with WinME at all. I have noticed that with older systems and peripherals that there are some problems, but anything made in the last 2 years runs great. Who know's maybe I'm just lucky.

Blah, Blah Blahh, Blahh, blahh blah blahh, blah blah.

Nothing worked with that OS and I had to spend hours reformating and installing Win98se again. It's not worth the hastle to bother with it one more time.

Exactly the same here, I wont touch it again, however I know of people with the same version ;) that have no problems at all.

XP would be a much better option. All the stablity and NT kernal and the compatability to run almost anything, even the games that try and detect the NT kernal. Also with XP being in the home and business world game companies cant hid behind that win2k is for business crap when it comes to games on XP.

Between ME, 2k, and XP, XP is clearly the winner. No preformance overhead hit over win9x on my machine and its stable as hell. That alone beats ME and XP. ME sucks for stablity and 2k has a slight overhead to it.

Yeah, but it's a hog. I read that microsoft is raising the requirements to basically 256 MB of memory and around a 550Mhz processor. That's a bit much don't you think? What is it using all that processing power for? None of my games even need that!

I haven't been running the beta, but I'll be getting the full version a bit early again, so we'll see...

XP is also designed to have you running multiple accounts at once. AKA be able to bring someone elses desktop up and still leave your applications running in your login. And for that reason is my them would bump up the requirements IMO. Comparitively my Quake3 gets the exact same fps in win98 as it does in winxp. I have dual boot and did the tests back to back, might have been a .1 fps differance. XP is definately what WinME was suppost to be, the stability of NT and the user friendlyness, idiot interface, of win9x. So far RC1 has done damn good, not a single crash, lookup, BSD. If something is known to cause problems XP will ask you if you want to load it at startup. Much better then Win2k that would give you the Blue Screen of Fuc|<doum(basically a reinstall unless you made recovery disks) when you installed something that screwed up its booting. Im still downloading RC2, but I have heard its basically the same with a bit more preformance pulled out. When I get it up and running and do some testing I'll let ya known. Right now im reading through the slackware 8.0 linux disk my friend gave me today.

But the thing is Xp won't run on over 70-80 percent of the current systems in the market. Also Microsoft is going to do something screwy with the licenseing. They aren't going to allow a one time license, it will be a three month renewable license and you have to register your version within 14 days or the system will crash and not let you use it. I don't know about you but I don't register my software just because I don't want to deal with the hassle of telemarketers and such. I also don't like all of the vulnerabilities inside of xp either. I say just stick to w2k and all will be good. If your game doesn't work in w2k just use 98se. Or just use linux ;)

Ok these goes to further support me believe that bullsh|t is ever, bullsh|t is rampent. Ok, the 14 day thing is just for windows product activation(WPA). WPA has nothing to do with registration. Which I have already found out has been compromised so that matter is NULL and VOID. You can still run XP without registering. Secondly find whom ever told you about the 3 month renewal thing and give them a good old fashioned bitch slap for being a complete and utter fuc|<ing idiot. My preview version of XP has a 180 day limit on it. Microsoft may be the root of all things evil in the computer market, but they have finally released something worthwhile thats stable and well preforming. Flame me all you want (preferable with actual fact, not bullsh|t like this), but dont knock it till you've tried it.

You'll need to re-register after a hardware change (or if it just thinks you've had a hardware change).

Hey,
I'm just going off of what I have been told. It was some old news and I hadn't heard anything different. There have been several releases of xp beta after the one my friend tested. His crashed after 14 of not registering. The newer ones might not have, but his did. Just letting you know. I saw toms review of xp and it's a different than the beta my friend has. I personally don't like to log on option of being able to see everyones hint. and also being able to see everyones account. With the way microsoft likes to leave back doors I wouldn't be surprised if they have a lot of people hacking into xp through the microsoft provided remote access tools. Just speaking my mind. I know rumors are the root of evil but who gives a [-peep-]. If I say something and it's wrong just let me know(and show me a site to prove it).

A coworker of mine went to a licensing seminar put on by M$ yesterday afternoon.

There's no more Small Business Edition in Office. Some of you will know that already, but it was a bit of a surprise. Nothing major.

OEM and off the shelf versions of XP (Office and Windows, I believe), will need to go through the activation process. Multi-user, corporate (or otherwise) licenses do NOT. These are the type that buy several licenses and get one or more install CDs, not packages with manuals, etc.
M$ says they aren't worried about piracy from these types of licenses, mostly the ones who buy one copy at a time.

If I remember more of what he told me, I'll let you know. This was news to me, don't know how it'll strike the rest of you.

You have to activate WinXP within 14 days, has nothing at all to do with registration. Activition is the bounding of your current computer setup to a Registartion Code. Its an antipiracy thing that checks your setup versus what should be for that registration code. You can change up to 4 things in an yet to be defined time period before you have to do a damn thing with reactivating.

Well I plan to stay with Win2k. Its the established (stable) MS OS. WinME is cool but I have never been able to get performence like people that brought their systems with it installed. XP is new and you know it will have bugs the same way 2k did. And the whole thing with having to call Microsoft after I change my hardware is rediculous. If they don't get ride of that Activation thing I be riding 2k for a long time. Besides I see XP as a desktop theme that was turned into a OS.
