Win XP Cert Errors Or Upgrade to Win 7...

I just dusted off my old Dell Latitude D600 laptop that I haven't used for several years. I never upgraded to Win 7 because the XP to Win 7 compatibility app indicated that Win 7 didn't support the Broadcom 570x gigbit Ethernet interface. So I have two Questions:

1. I planned to use it on a casual basis to support HAM radio running XP but ran into a problem when I tried to load Outlook.com within a browser. I keep getting a cert error and don't seem to be able to get by it because I can't load the latest cert. Can anyone suggest a way around the cert problem?

2. Barring this, maybe I'm install Win 7 on the machine, ignoring the ethernet problem by using the wireless features. Any advice on this?

Or should I dump this old machine a get a better one?

I'm assuming you are using Internet Explorer 8.

If you download Chrome or Firefox they should come with up to date root certificates for your sites.

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner with this one. The D600 is just too old, wasn't really all that responsive with XP, and (discounting the lack of an ethernet driver) even if you could get Windows 7 installed, would be even worse. You're further ahead to dump that dinosaur and get something quite a bit newer.

Firefox version 52 does support Windows Xp.

Not the most optimal, but it works.

It's a 14 year old laptop, that wasn't great when it was new.

There comes a time when it's just not worth the brainache to try to force old junk to meet new usage.
Any $400 laptop from BestBuy will crush whatever you could do with the old D600.

I've seen certificate issues can sometimes be caused the time in Windows being not correct. A PC that was stored long enough to have its CMOS battery die may no longer have the correct time. Try manually synchronizing your time using "Time and Date" in control panel with the Windows time server. It's in the Internet Time tab, select "Update Now". Even if the time is slightly off it can make certs not work.

Firefox and Chrome (before version 50) should work on an XP machine. It could be IE that is the problem.

If you can't get Ethernet drivers for your ports you could purchase a Ethernet to USB adapter. https://www.amazon.ca/Cisco-USB300M-Linksys-Ethernet-Adapter/dp/B001NLV4TQ Would work with Windows XP.
