win xp connecting to the nework but not the internet

I have a friend’s win xp computer that they desperately need for a expensive
program on it that only runs in win xp.

I thought it was a problem with the winsock in the network part of win xp. Through doing some problem solving there it is now narrowed down to something software is stopping the computer from connecting to the internet

The lan adapter and wifi work fine they connect to the network but they do not
go out to the internet

I don’t have a proxy running

I did do a reset of the winsock ..not luck

if I do a ping it wont get out to the server and fails

I cant use any browser I tried 3 and none work.


i discovered in safe mode I can connect to the
internet. but At this point I am not sure if anyone here in the
can help but I am really hoping to get this computer connecting
again without reinstalling windows xp.

Are you running any virus scanners, firewalls, etc?

Anything out of the ordinary being run at start-up? Have you run msconfig to see if anything has been added?

I saw this post on the other website- I wonder if the member that knew "hijackthis" is also a member here. You might send him a private message with a link to this thread. I was very interested in seeing where the solution was going, until it came to an abrupt end.

Yes I was on that site and was being helped but the moderator said I checked this was to be used in the malware forums causing that person to quit helping me and so I haven't got any help on that site for two days so I thought I would try Tom's Hardware

Have you run Task Manager to make a list of all of the processes running on the computer? Anything strange, unrecognized? Does task manager show any Network connectivity being used by another process?

When this has happened to me: some software running updates, locking everything else out OR a virus scanner/firewall blocking connectivity.

You could try the suggestions made on the other forum, and send a private message to the member that was so helpful.

I want to say thank you to everyone at this site for helping me. It was something with software or maybe malware.

I was also getting help at a other sites malware forum and it is finally fixed
they had me do a specific fix using the frst program and everything got cleaned out
that was causing the problem ...

I'm glad the problem is solved- I read the thread on the other forum. Not sure what the fix was! I call that type of approach "depth charging", do lots of stuff until the problem goes away. I've had to de-install AVAST from my XP machines, it was causing all sorts of problems. I use the "POS" registry fix on my XP machine, got 170 updates.

With the machine working now- you might want to do a "stand-alone" backup of the Disk to a second drive or to a large thumb drive. It sounds like this machine is "critical". Machines running XP are dirt cheap these days, well under $100. It sounds like your machine performs a unique function.

Funny you should say that about doing a clone of the hard drive. I made
the same suggestion. I hope he decides to have me do it now that the problem is
fixed.
Btw, what is the "POS" registry fix?
And I also, mentioned getting a 2nd xp machine back up..lol

I have a "spare" laptop, could not resist trying it out. So far- the laptop is stable when websurfing and running software. After following the instructions, "Update" found ~170 updates for XP SP3.
