Since Win XP is 64 bit, wouldn't it be better to wait for the 64 bit AMD processor in stead of buying the T-bird.

What do you think?

Yes, but XP is 32 OR 64 bit, so it'll run well on either. 64 bit processors (Itanium and SledgeHammer) are still a way out.

WinXP is 32-bit.

It'd be kinda stupid to release a 64-bit OS when the entire target market has 32-bit CPU's.

Uh, "the target audience" what the hell are you talking about XP is the next incarnation of NT. They build it for multiple platforms. so YES it is for both 32bit and 64bit processors.

32 bit? I'll have to check on that...

Looks like I was partially right. There are actually TWO different versions to be released. 32-bit and 64-bit.

Microsoft has introduced its first 64-bit client operating system, Windows® XP 64-Bit Edition.
The key difference between 32-bit and 64-bit Windows XP-based computing lies in the 64-bit version’s ability to use much more system memory.

XP, as is, is the upcoming "home version" of Win2K (so to speak).

It's targeted to the AVERAGE USER, not to business. Its business version will come slightly later as Win2K1 (or 2K2, can't remember which).

It's the first merge of NT and 95/98, basically. The 95/98 environment on the NT kernel

Where did you see that there's a business version coming out? That seems to contradict everything I've seen.

Once again, someone is partially right. This time it's you.
According to Microsoft's page on Windows XP, there is a Windows XP Professional and Home Version. This I did not know. This sort of defeats the purpose of merging NT and 95/98, but not totally.

Itanium is out, We begin shipping our custom rigs first week of july.

http://www.microsoft.com/WINDOWSXP/news/64bit.asp

As far as XP running on the hammer, I don't think it will. but who knows with AMD pushing the release back, it may be functional on hammmer when its released.

http://www.simics.com/

Currently the "hammer" is a software simulator and has the functionality of a macromedia demo, so you cannot load XP on simic simulator.

http://www.simics.com/support/knownissues.shtml

The world will know when AMD fabs a engineering sample of the hammer.

I didn't know Itanium was out yet. Do you have a link to a press release or something? I'd love to know more.
Thanks for the info

rcf, I have to admit - I cringe everytime I am on a 98/me machine. I don't have the time to learn/use unix and Autodesk doesn't support linux so I am out there too. NT is great but damn I wish it had USB. AS far as 2000, I say, what a way to screw up NT.

My inside IT buddies keep telling me that when XP is running on a 64bit proc - watch out. I think I will stick with NT 'till then.

BTW, anybody set up a multi proc farm on the linux kernel using.... crap I can't remembr the name. Anyway. I heard even 486's still have a use in that respect, assuming you have like 40 of them.

 on company time....
