Hi,
I've had this problem for a while now where my Windows would install the update and always gave me the error from Sihost.exe "Unknown Hard error."
At times, this won't allow me to access my desktop because the error interferes, or when I do gain access, my desktop shows but switches to black (usually fixes when running task manager and opening a new explorer.exe"
Until recently, I downloaded the Win10 Update Assistant, and it actually worked, allowing the update to install without any freezing as it usually does, but I still got the same error. I ran Powershell with a few commands I found to see if it would help and restarted the computer to see if that helped. However, I was met with the same "Restoring previous version of Windows" even after it looked like 1803 was installed correctly.

I have no idea what to do anymore, and I'm going mad after having to waste my time whenever Windows updates freeze or reverts after a long process of installation.

My specs are as follows:
- MOBO: Asus M5A97 LE R.2 (BIOS updated recently)
- AMD FX-6300 (6 core 3.5 Ghz)
- 4x4 Gb RAM
- MSI Nvidia GTX 750 TI
- EVGA 500W (recently bought after PSU failure from another unit)
- 2TB WB HDD (1TB WB Slave HDD)

Increasingly, Win10 updates dont work with older systems, MicroGit told the world this over a year ago, so it might be that is the problem.

Alternatively, it could be it doesnt like your RAM, wasnt there a stability issue with using all 4 slots on that board ? Depending on what capacity and speed RAM was used.

(I had that board; the SATA ports started falling off; not Asus's finest hour).

I don't remember having any stability issues with the RAM, but are you suggesting that it's due to my old MOBO?

It might be either, the mobo is old and Win10 may not have suitable drivers for everything on it; there have been issues for some people since the day Win10 was released, and it hasnt gotten any better.

Did you find the mobo manual and look for any RAM warnings? It might be I am thinking of an issue with 8GB modules, but it was a while back.

I checked up on the manual, and the only issues with it is not being able to support sticks with greater than 2133 Mhz in which my sticks are only running 933 Mhz and 800 Mhz (2 Crucial and 2 G.Skill)
Other than that, just warnings using > 4 Gb Ram for 32-bit Windows (in which mine is 64-bit).

Most likely, it can be the motherboard then.

That can be a possibility. I'll try this out to see if anything fixes. If not, I'll have to get rid of this 6 year old build and start anew with a better Mobo since the problem might be there as well.
