Win2000 halts for few seconds ?

For some reason, Windows 2000 seems to alway halt for a few seconds frequently, like every 15 mins for around 4 seconds each halt. During the halt, I cannot move the mouse, but the music on the background can still play.

so what's the cause of the halt and any solutions to solve it.

Note: I am sure it's not because of max utilisation of CPU because it halts when I am doing very basic things. I have an Athlon 1.2Ghz with 256 MB RAM

Thanks

Have you checked the processes running in the background? Are there any "hogs" on the list?

Is the harddrive caching or is there any disk activity? I have had problems with games pausing for now reason for the drive to cache up. It hasnt done this before under win98 or other installs of Win2k. Also, check your event log after one of these pauses and see if some event was logged.
