I am using Win2000 at work and I really love it. I would like to use it at home, but I want to be sure most games are running. A few months back I took a survey of popular games from the manufacturers websites. Almost all reported problems running the games wint Win2K or claimed it did not work with Win2K. Anybody out there running several different games (DirectX and opengl) with Win2K?

I had no problem with :

Half-Life Counter-Strike
MS Age of empires
Icewind Dale
The little vegas game for my mom and my girlfriend 😉

I had problems with :

Baldur's gate (it was running but crash after 15min or so)
The 4th prophetie multiplayer game (won't run at all)

P.S. : All my games had the latest patchs

My config :
Athlon 550
Asus K7V latest BIOS
Guillemot 3D Prophet (Det. 3 drivers, latest BIOS)
DX 8.0
Win2k SP1

I returned to Win98 for Baldur's gate 🙁, but I still love win2k.

I've managed to get quite a few games working on Win2K

Have a look at the following site:

http://home-3.worldonline.nl/~scififan/win2000/win2000.html

It has a list of games that people have tried. Some games like Quake2 which I had problems with may need a manual installation. You'll also need MS Compatibility Update which is provided at the site. When a game installs, it checks the Operating System version. The update enables you to load games that wouldn't normally load because they thing they are loading on WinNT, but Win2K can lie and the installation goes ahead. There is also a little MS compatibility app that can do the same I believe.

Age of Empires - works on Win2k with DX7, but NOT DX8.

Age of Empires 2 - works on Win2k with DX7, but NOT DX8.

Quake 3 - runs fine on Win2k w/DX7, haven't tried it w/DX8.

Soldier of Fortune - runs fine on Win2k w/ both DX7 & DX8.

Half Life - runs fine on Win2k w/DX7, haven't tried it w/DX8.

Unreal - runs fine on Win2k w/DX7, haven't tried it w/DX8.

Unreal Tournament - runs fine on Win2k w/DX7, haven't tried it w/DX8.

MDK2 Demo - runs fine on Win2k w/DX7, haven't tried it w/DX8.

Evolva Demo - runs fine on Win2k w/DX7, haven't tried it w/DX8.

All tests were done with Leadtek Winfast Geforce 2 GTS 64MB video card.

NOTE: Had trouble with DX8 untill I upgraded to the 7.17 driver for Geforce 2. This driver upgrade still didn't help Age of Empires 1 & 2, those games run but some things are missing. : (
