Hello,

I've been having many troubles putting my IBM 45gig Deskstar on my Promise ATA100. I installed Win2k SP1 successfully while the HD was connected to the ATA66 port and Win2k runs great on ATA66, in fact I'm using the HD on the ATA66 port now. I've installed all the latest Promise drivers (1.60 b33) and the latest BIOS (v1006). When I switch the HD over to ATA100, Win2k starts up fine, but when I login, the computer hangs during the login process. Does anyone have a clue as to what's wrong? Thanks a lot,

My soyo mb with the 686b southbridge (ata100) chipset will only work in pio mode with an ata100 drive in win2k. It is very slow, of course. I used a utility that wd shipped with the drive to change it to ata66 and it works fine now. Win2k has an issue with ata100 which is being addressed in sp2. I've read post of people who have got their ata100 drives to work with ata100 though. So, I'll just use ata66, which is only slightly slower that ata66, until sp2 comes out. Your drive max's out at around 34 mb/s sustained transfer, so the only speed increase ata100 has is during burst reads.

You might want to try to disable DMA mode in the BIOS and let Windows 2000 set it up itself. That might help.

I've got two Win2000 pro SP1 systems with ATA100 and they both work fine.

- Highpoint 370 ATA100 RAID card on an Asus P2B-D (BX) board
- Promise ATA100 built on the Asus A7V (KT133) board

They are using Maxstor, Quantum, and Fujitsu drives. I'm using the 1005C BIOS in the A7V and whatever drivers came on the cd with the m/b.
