win2k Shutdown problem

Got problems with win2k shutdown. Don't know when this problem occured the first time but i tried to repair the Wincfg with a repair disc with no luck. Know that it's not a hardware/Bios related problem since i tested to shutdown the machine from Dos and there was no problems. Also got the latest Bios update for my ABIT BH6 board. Uninstalled some drivers for my, graphic card, DirectX, scanner. This didn't seem to help either. Any hints?

umm, are we supposed to guess the problem you have? or were you going to tell us? then maybe someone could help correct it.

well, the problem is that the computer refuse to shut down.

rude? i think you would know if i was being rude or not. there are different things that can be a problem at shutdown. maybe actually saying WHAT THE PROBLEM IS would be helpful. would you know what i was talking about if i posted a question- hey, i have a problem at startup, can anyone help? or i have a problem playing games, any clues?

Type-written messages can easily be misinterpreted vs the oral variety ... which explains the widespread use of emoticons. mbetea was not trying to be rude ... he was just being blunt and straight-up about the lack of information in the post. I had also taken a look at the post, and meant to ask misterOne if there were any error messages to be found in the Event Viewer that might help explain away the problem. To misquote Mr. Gump, "Vague is as vague does". It's a common occurrence.

Let's be merry, gentlemen ... there's been a rash of funky flaming lately, and that does no one any good, especially the person with the problem. Some posts <i>can</i> be rude, but take my word for it, compatoll ... mbetea is not the kind of person to attack someone without a valid reason.

Helping others is the goal here, gents ... let's get back to business!

things i would try are:

go into management console (right click on my computer/manage) go into event viewer, under applictations and system see what error messages correspond with shutting down. also as toejam suggested, are there any error messages that come up on screen?

go into bios and at least for the time being disable any "suspend mode" features. (wake on lan, etc)

uninstall all device drivers and let windows reinstall them and install any 3rd party drivers that are needed (eg. nvidia, creative, etc).

sorry if you thought i was being rude. but it's helpful if you're as specific as possible, so things like hardware config (mobo, sound card, video card, other peripherals). what exactly is it doing? just hangs at the blue log off/on screen, restarts when you try to shut down? hangs on a black/blank screen?

Ok,thanks guys for all the information. let me be more specific this time. during shutdown i get no errormessages whatsoever, only "windows save settings"-you can now shutdown your computer manually"(thought this was an old AT-thing) And i checked the management console and, yes, found some real advanced error reports which don't mean nothing to me(some registry errors among others..)guess i have to do some cleaning here..thanks anyway, appreciate it.

it goes to the old "it is safe to turn off your computer" screen? sounds like something with powermanagement settings or a program that didn't get uninstalled correctly or modified, thus the registry errors.

When my friend installed Linux with GRUB as its bootloader, the same thing happenned to his XP Pro. Now, Linux appropriately shuts the PC down and turns it off, but XP doesn't turn the power off automatically (I suppose this is because of Linux overwriting the NT bootloader on the Master Boot Record of his hard disk).
However, see if this tweak to the registry helps; Open the registry and find the key below:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Now find the value 'PowerdownAfterShutdown' and set it to "1". If there's no such value there, just create it. It's a string (REG_SZ) type. Tell me if it helped!

lots of info helps when problem solving.... cant give too much in my experience.

also, for me personally and win2k i run two programs that seem to prevent my win2k beast from shutting down, UD - cure for cancer and its monitoring program.
when i do start shutdown one program gets terminated, but the shutdown process goes no further.

so keep an eye out of any apps you have running. try terminating any unknowns BEFORE shutting down, see if that makes a difference.
