Hi

I've pre-oredered Win7 Home Premium E from amazon.co.uk

On amazon.co.uk http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000321063
At present in the EU, all versions of Windows 7 (Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate) are the full product. This means that to install Windows 7, you do not need any previous version of Windows installed on your computer.
So I read this as, for example, I have a empty hd, I can install win7 on it without any problems.

On Microsoft UK website http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windows/buy/offers/pre-order-faq.aspx
To be eligible for the offer, you need to be running a genuine copy of the Windows XP or Windows Vista operating systems.
And I read this as, win7 must recognise a previous OS on the hd before it will do a clean install. which sounds like it works like a upgrade version to me

Which one is correct?

I believe that it's referring to the discounted price. You need to provide proof of a previous copy of Vista. Or maybe I read it wrong. I dunno.

This is why I'm not sure. I wasn't asked for anything when making the purchase, and I did check to see if the description of the product with any of the retailers referred to it as an upgrade. None of them do, it is just sold as a copy of Windows 7. Also, none of them mention your requiring an earlier version of Windows.

I'm reasonably sure that what we're getting is just a new OS, but I am now a little concerned.

Hmm, I have ordered a copy too and have to agree it is very confusing. I looked around a few places before ordering and I do not recall seeing any of them saying anything about it being an 'upgrade' product which surely they must do if that is so. It seems to be advertised as full at product on special pre order price and if it is not so I would hope to have some grounds for a refund. I think I shall save a copy of the web page just in case.

I have ordered it on that basis anyway. I am not too bothered about Windows 7 really, I just like the idea of a proper full version which I can use after doing a computer rebuild and not be stuck with an oem licence.

My understanding is that the USA version is an upgrade version whereas the UK one is not. So, to upgrade you need a previous version. The UK version does not need a previous Windows version - it is a 'clean' install... There is also no IE8 with the UK one whereas the USA one has this in it. So, go Firefox 3.51 or whatever.
