seeing how the new breed of empire player has
progressed to and embraced windows, isn't it
ime for all you native unix/vax/linux/etc guys
to be able to compete with them with by having
the latest, modernest, and powerfulest tools
and clients available???
ie: where is the winace for linux port (so that you
all can stay competitive?)?

You can be competitive with the basic client, learning curve is a bit higher
though.
On the brighter side, there are no less than two Perl clients being
developed, at least one of which is a GUI. Also, the Python interface should
be, I believe, Unix compatible (Never used it myself though).

Hope that helps,
Mark

Whatever happened to xemp?
That actually predates windows itself I think.
I don't remember who built it or where it is
right now, but if y'all don't know what I'm talking about,
I'll see if I can track it down. I think it was the berkely dudes.

Since I've gone over to the Dark side (ie, winblows),
I don't really care much anymore but am willing to help
out any and all players.

The new breed of empire player is a different subject.
I remember the good old days when we actually used to
fight each other. Nowadays it seems like cats just explore,
roll fodder and engage in "Mexican standoffs"

*sigh*

Half the world in sheepfarm has already conceded and we
haven't even reached jet tech yet.

When's the last time someone actually got nuked?

I'm going to resurrect Fodderland.

ptkei works as expected under any os i tried it on. right now
i share my EmpDB between ptkei running on windows, linux and
freebsd without any problems. too bad having such a fine client
doesn't make me a better player 🙂

have fun! Grobbeltje.

Hmmm, I read:
ptkei has thrown exceptions under any os I tried it on.

Yesterday it corrupted my database once again after a ship I was
firing on sunk.

is that due to ptkei or python?
apart from display related exceptions, i've not had problems yet.

ptkei has the tendency to freeze on my Debian/unstable machines (worked
fine on Debian/stable). On the other machines I tried ptkei (FreeBSD
4.x and 5.2.1 (iow toad/turtle/snail)) has corrupted my db several
times.

ASAP (when I get ADSL up and running and when there is any sign of
summer weather) there will be a BLEP (Bbq for Lame Empire Players). So
hereby any empire player in the neighbourhood of (or willing to travel
to) Eindhoven (NL) will be welcome.

> Tue Jun 29 16:05 Pern nuclear device devastates Uesugi sector seven times

Pern... same Pern of 13 years ago? Well well... Okay, to
answer the original question:

XEMP was written mainly by Henk-Jan Visscher, then studying
informatics at the Free University in Amsterdam. I watched
him try his first versions - just taking data from the server
and displaying the map and census info... It became a good
graphical interface and client (finding best paths to do
the transport stuff etc) around 1991. Later on the guy
stopped the development and others took over. I left the
university / Unix / X-Windows environment by then and never
saw it back...

Henk-Jan played the game too, can't remember his usual
country name. He was a kind of extremely helpful programmer
and hacker, usually smoking a sigarette while typing 10
characters a second (of which 3 backspaces 🙂. Don't know
what became of him.
