Hey folks,

When the PC is off for a while and click it on, this "winconfigmg" during the windows boot process pops up and says I have to restart the system. After hitting CTRL + ALT + DEL it boots again and goes into the screen where I can choose to either go into SAFE MODE, or the PROMPT or NORMAL. Does anyone know what this is? After all this it boots up fine. Is it something that I can fix in the Registry or in DOS?

CMOS batteries usually have a max life of about three years, some don't last anywhere near that long, how old is your machine? You may possibly need to replace the CMOS battery, look for the simple first, and then branch out from there if that doesn't solve the problem.

Granted. But these lithium batteries have a shelf-life of about 5-7 years. I did check the battery w/ a multimeter and it's in the green. The oldest piece I have on my PC is the FDD. The mobo is about a month old. I did flash the BIOS. Could it be from that? If I flashed it wrong I shouldn't even be able to get to the POST screen. I'm stumped.

I did check to make sure all my jumpers are correctly shorted and made sure the RAM and IDE cables are snug. If they aren't I wouldn't get past the POST screen.

Maybe I need to re-install windows after the flash.

When you built this system was everything new?

A bad BIOS flash = nothing at all, not your problem.

Check RAM, with Memtest86<A HREF="http://www.bootdisk.com/utility.htm" target="_new">Acquired Here</A>under Memory.


Hardrive( If the hardrive wasn't new, it may need to be wiped clean with a factory diagnostics disk[IE; Zero Fill, Disk WIpe, Whatever your diagnostics disk name for a Low Level Format is], then FDISK, FORMAT, REINSTALL OP/SYS)

No, not everything is new. The only thing new is the mobo. I did MEMTEST on my RAM when it was still in the old mobo and passed with flying colors. I used Seagate's Disc Wizard which came with the 7200.2 hard drive. Both HDDs check out. I did format the hard drive before I installed the OS.

Like I said, if the flash went bad I don't think I'd be able to write to you.
